Your application for unemployment benefit – documents are missing

So I went to the “Agentur für Arbeit” to confirm my ID a couple of days before my first day of unemployment. While there, I also gave them the “Arbeitsbescheinigung” for my latest job, which I got from my boss via email.

But then a few days later, I got a letter in the mail. It said that they still needed the document.

vielen Dank fur die Übersendung Ihres Antrags mit Wirkung zum TT.MM.YYYY. Ich kann Ihren Antrag leider noch nicht bearbeiten, weil die folgenden Unterlagen fehlen:

Arbeitgeber erstellen Arbeitsbescheinigungen in der Regel elektronisch. Sollten Sie einen Papiervordruck benötigen, finden Sie auf www.arbeitsagentur.de unter “Download-Center > Arbeitsbescheinigung für den Bereich SGB III” ein Formular für Ihren Arbeitgeber zum Download und Ausdruck.

Bitte reichen Sie die fehlende Arbeitsbescheinigung bzw. die fehlenden Arbeitsbescheinigungen bis zum TT.MM.YYYY ein. Eine Arbeitsbescheinigung, die Ihr Arbeitgeber auf elektronischem Weg an uns übermittelt, müssen Sie nicht einreichen. Dieses Schreiben wurde maschinell erstellt und deshalb nicht unterschrieben.

I emailed my boss to send it to them, because I know that worked for me in the past. But my boss said that they don’t have that setup (probably because they are a small company.)

So I printed the document again, and prepared to go there again.

When I was there the first time, since my German isn’t very good. I left somewhat confused, so I wanted to avoid that this time. So I worked out a strategy to prepare some text beforehand.

Ich war hier am 30. Mai und habe Arbeitsbescheinigung gegeben. Aber ich habe ein Brief bekommen. Er sagt, die Arbeitsbescheinigung ist dort nicht.

Ich habe ein Duplikat-Arbeitsbescheinigung gebracht. Vielleicht die Problem war weil ich habe nicht meine Kundennummer vor geschrieben.

Ich habe mein Boss gemailt. Ich sag, bitte senden die Arbeitsbescheinigung zu die Arbeitsagentur. 

Er sagt, wir haben nicht ein Konto zu senden direkt zu die Arbeitsagentur. Er sendet mir das Original-Arbeitsbescheinigung. Dann ich komme mit das Original in der Zukunft.

I wrote a beginning question, and then I tried to write further questions to handle the problem cases. I formatted the questions so each took up half of a page, folded the paper, so only one was visible at a time, not to overwhelm the worker.

I think the idea is good. But the execution this time didn’t quite work. When I was there, I explained that I don’t speak German so well, so I wrote some text, and then said to read it please.

The worker looked at it, and gave a good chuckle, I think it was amusing for them. But I was pretty happy. Since in the first text I mention a letter, I gave him the letter next.

After a bit of work on the computer or something, I forget, the worker checked one of the answers. But I think the answer options were not quite clear. The worker checked the one, that I meant to mean, that “we still have a problem” but said things, as I understood, that things were good. So I think the question was not phrased the best, and I think in the future, I would try to have them answer two questions.

The questions would essentially be asking the same thing, but in different ways, to avoid problems with bad translations or understandings.

For next time, I would also learn exactly how to say, “Is there still problems?”

The worker also typed something into google translation and showed it to me, I think this was a bit tough that I put them into the situation. The ideal outcome would have been that I was able to explain to them, that I want them to write or type and print some short explanation in German of the outcome, and I show it to friend later.

Also, this time, I was still a bit not totally confident in the result. Because of the confusion of the worker picking, “Ja, die Problem geht weiter.” (Yes, the problem continues.) I think they picked this, because the process was still going, but there was nothing for me to do.

They wrote via Google Translate that I just need to wait some more days.

In the future, I would have a document, that asked some summary questions.

like:

[ ] Do you still need anything from me?

[ ] Is everything good?

Getting some answers to yes/no questions would give me more confidence that there weren’t any mis-understandings, because, right now, after these situations, I am left with some confusion, and a desire to have someone call them to double check the situation.
